Did you know that there are around 6.2 crore stray dogs and 91 lakh street cats in India? (source) We see Indie dogs almost everywhere, still, the inhumane, unethical dog breeding industry produces millions of dogs each year and sells them at pet stores.
Now, there may be subjective reasons why Indie dogs often don’t get the love and appreciation they deserve, but trust me, when you hold one in your lap and look into their eyes, you can see trust, love, and loyalty.
I recently met a 70-year-old lady who takes care of indie puppies, and I was so happy to meet such a pure soul. If you are looking to adopt your first, second or nth dog and can not bring yourself around to the idea of getting an Indie dog home, here is my experience of meeting her. Which, I think, would surely change your mind.
People For Animals (PFA)
People for Animals is India's largest Non-Governmental Animal Welfare Organization with a nationwide network of 26 hospitals, 165 units, 60 mobile units, and 2.5 Lakh members. They work to rescue and rehabilitate sick and needy animals.
We (students from NIE) went there to volunteer and help animals. It's a great place to be at. The moment you step through the door, you'll feel a different energy. Everyone there is friendly and compassionate. We met Savitha Nagabhushan, PFA managing trustee.
Hello, Hoomans 🐕🐶
PFA connected us to a 70-year-old lady. She is fostering six healthy puppies ready for adoption.
We visited her home to meet the puppies. It started with four super excited pups greeting us by wagging their tails, jumping, and running randomly.
You can't see their excitement through the image, but trust me, the 4 of them were ready to jump on us altogether.
Mrs. Sudha loves dogs. She fosters homeless puppies and nurtures them for a while until adopted by someone, and are shifted to a permanent home with a family. Despite not being well, she has taken care of these puppies so well. All the puppies looked happy and in the best of their health. Until now, she has taken care of more than 100 puppies.

There’s a reason why dogs are called a man’s best friend. They give us memories that we cherish forever. You might be getting a pet dog for your purposes, but for a dog, you become their whole world by giving them a healthy space to live.
Prejudices against Indie dogs not only rob them of the loving home they deserve but also feed a cruel breeding industry that is as unethical as it is illegal. Give these over-excited cute puppies a home by adopting one instead of going for foreign breeds.
The biggest incentive and reward you can get is the joy and happiness of having saved a life! There’s nothing in this world that can make you truly happier. It gives you a sense of delight and pride that can never be bought using money and is the most wonderful feeling you will have all your life.
And, that’s not all! By adopting a pet from a shelter, you will also be signing up for unconditional love and a lifelong BFF!

Note: The lady told us that some people near Mysore, adopt them to guard their farms. However, those farms are not safe because of leopards. We don't want these angels to end up in a place where they are not safe. So if you want to adopt them, it's preferred that you have a permanent home in a secure environment.
